Sony FX5: Cinema Line Power in an Ultra-Compact Body

Sony’s Cinema Line keeps growing, and the new FX5 might be its most versatile member yet. Positioned above the popular FX3, it brings features previously reserved for high-end cinema cameras into a body small enough for gimbals, drones and run-and-gun shoots. The FX5 is now available at Axis-One, as a body only or with the XLR Handle Unit.

Sony FX5 Cinema Line camera

A brand-new sensor built for image quality

At the heart of the FX5 is a newly developed 16.6 MP full-frame, fully stacked Exmor RS sensor, paired with Sony’s latest BIONZ XR2 processor and a dedicated AI processing unit. The result is more than 15 stops of dynamic range in S-Log3, fast readout and clean images in challenging light.

Low-light shooters will appreciate the three base ISOs (800, 4000 and 12800). The FX5 also introduces Dual Gain shooting to the FX series, drawing more from the sensor for smoother gradations, wider latitude and cleaner shadows.

Open Gate and internal RAW: a first for the FX series

For the first time in an FX camera, you can record Open Gate, using the full 3:2 sensor area at up to 5K 60p. That gives you the freedom to reframe for widescreen, square or vertical deliveries from a single take. Classic 17:9 and 16:9 modes are there too, with 4K up to 120p for slow motion, as well as a Super 35 scan mode.

The FX5 also records Sony’s 16-bit X-OCN RAW format internally. No external recorder, no extra cables: just maximum grading flexibility straight from the card.

Autofocus you can rely on

AI-based subject recognition and Fast Hybrid AF keep your subject sharp, even in demanding situations or when you work as a one-person crew. Combined with 5-axis in-body stabilisation, the FX5 is ready for handheld work.

Designed for real productions

Dual CFexpress Type A / SD slots, active cooling for long takes, a 3.5″ multi-angle touchscreen and the streamlined Cinema Line menu system make the FX5 easy to integrate into any workflow, from documentaries and interviews to commercials and short films. Add the XLR Handle Unit and you get professional XLR audio inputs directly on the camera.

Even more to come

Sony has announced firmware updates adding high frame rate recording up to 240 fps in X-OCN, a user interface optimised for vertical shooting and a frame grab function.
